This past Sunday, Father's Day, I spoke from the book of Proverbs and presented 10 Foundational Lessons that parents should teach their children.
You can listen to that message here.
I believe that Proverbs teaches that parents (Particularly fathers as the representative head of the home) primary duty is to teach holy living to their children. This is accomplished by living as an example and by teaching wisdom. John MacArthur has identified 10 crucial lessons contained within the first nine chapters of proverbs and I have adapted them. They are...
1. Fear God (1:7)
2. Guard Your Mind (4:23)
3. Obey Your Parents (1:8)
4. Choose Friends Wisely (1:10, 18:24)
5. Control Your Body (5:1-11)
6. Have a Healthy View of Sex (5:15-21)
7. Watch Your Words (4:24)
8. Work Hard (6:6)
9. Manage Your Money (3:9, 6:1)
10. Love Your Neighbor (3:27-30)
There is much that can be said in regards to spending time with your children, listening to them, cultivating their interests, and the like, but in the end God's desire is for us to raise children that love and serve him. Therefore I marks these 10 lessons as the foundations from which all the rest can be built on.
